Pump Care: 4 Checks to Keep Your Excavator's Heart Beating

The hydraulic pump is the heart of your excavator. It converts engine power into hydraulic flow, driving every function — boom, arm, bucket, swing, and travel. When the pump fails, the machine stops. Most pump failures give warning signs. Here are four checks that catch pump problems early.

 

1. Listen for Unusual Pump Noises

A healthy hydraulic pump produces a steady, smooth whine. A change in sound is the first warning. Start the engine and warm the hydraulic oil to operating temperature. Listen at the pump with the engine at low idle, then increase to full throttle.

A high-pitched squeal often means cavitation — the pump is starved for oil. Check the suction strainer and intake hose.

A knocking or rattling sound indicates internal wear — pistons or slippers are loose.

A loud, deep growl under load points to worn bearings or scored cylinder barrels.

If the pump sounds different than it did last week, investigate before it fails completely.

 

2. Check Pump Housing Temperature

An overheating pump is a dying pump. After an hour of normal work, place your hand near the pump housing (do not touch hot metal). It should be warm but not too hot to hold your hand within 10cm for five seconds.

Excessive heat means internal leakage or lack of oil flow.

A cold pump on a working machine may mean the pump is not moving oil — check the suction line or drive coupling.

Record normal operating temperature with an infrared thermometer. If temperature rises more than 10°C above normal, investigate the cause.

 

3. Inspect the Pump Drive Coupling

The pump is driven by a coupling connected to the engine flywheel or gearbox. Worn couplings cause misalignment and vibration, which destroys pump bearings.

Look at the coupling through the inspection port. Check for cracked rubber elements or worn splines.

Listen for a rhythmic clicking or clunking at idle — this often indicates a loose or failing coupling.

If the coupling shows signs of wear, replace it at the next service. A failed coupling can damage both the pump and the engine.

 

4. Check Pump Case Drain Flow

The pump has a case drain line that returns internal leakage oil to the tank. Increasing case drain flow means the pump is wearing internally.

Monitor the case drain filter or magnetic plug for metal debris.

Measure case drain flow with a flow meter. Compare to the specification in your manual.

 

If case drain flow exceeds 10–15% of pump output, plan for a pump rebuild.

Catching wear early lets you rebuild the pump instead of replacing it — saving thousands of dollars.

 

Quick field check: Start the engine and cycle each function (boom, arm, bucket, swing, travel) while watching the pump at idle. If the pump whine changes dramatically when you move a lever, the pump is responding to load — but if it groans or hesitates, there is a problem.
