Loader Loading Trucks? 4 Tricks to Shave Seconds Off Each Cycle

Loading trucks is the most common job for a wheel loader. Yet many operators waste seconds on every cycle — and those seconds add up to dozens of lost loads per shift. Here are four simple techniques to speed up truck loading without burning more fuel or wearing out the machine.

1. Align at a 30‑Degree Angle, Not Head‑On

Approaching the truck straight on forces you to make wide turns after dumping. Instead, approach the truck at a 30‑degree angle from the side. Fill the bucket, back up slightly, turn toward the truck, dump, then reverse out along the same angled path. This creates a C‑shaped cycle rather than a longer U‑shaped one. Practice this for a day — most operators cut cycle time by 10–15%.

2. Don’t Lift the Bucket Too Early

Raising the bucket before you reach the truck wastes hydraulic flow and time. Keep the bucket at 200–300mm off the ground while traveling. Start lifting only when you are within one machine length of the truck. The lift and dump motions should flow together without a pause.

3. Spot the Truck for Minimal Back‑Up Distance

When the truck pulls in, wave the driver to stop so the truck’s side is just past the middle of your loader’s turning radius. This way, after dumping, you reverse only a few meters before you can turn and drive forward to the stockpile. If the truck stops too far forward or back, you end up reversing half the site.

4. Use the Bucket’s “Roll‑Back” to Retain Material

On the way to the truck, keep the bucket slightly rolled back (about 10–15 degrees above level). This prevents material from spilling over the cutting edge. Just before dumping, roll forward quickly and lift simultaneously. A smooth, fast roll‑and‑lift motion empties the bucket completely in one motion, avoiding the need to shake or double‑dump.
