The global construction equipment industry is accelerating toward electrification — but at very different speeds across product lines.
April 2026 sales data from the China Construction Machinery Association reveals a stark contrast. Electric wheel loaders sold 5,575 units in April alone, achieving a domestic market penetration rate of approximately 36.1%. That means more than one in three new loaders delivered to Chinese sites is now battery-powered. From January to April, cumulative electric loader sales reached 15,870 units — already surpassing the entire total for all of 2024.
Meanwhile, electric excavators remain a niche segment. Only 27 electric excavators were sold in April, with penetration still near zero. The gap highlights significant differences in battery adaptation, duty cycle compatibility, and cost structures between the two machine types. Excavators require more instantaneous hydraulic power and face tougher thermal management challenges, delaying their transition.
The forklift market tells a different story. In Europe, electric trucks now account for over 70% of new forklift sales, and lithium‑ion batteries are on track to surpass lead‑acid by 2026 in global electric forklift market share. Lower total ownership costs and opportunity charging are driving rapid fleet conversions worldwide.
Major OEMs have taken notice. At CONEXPO 2026 in Las Vegas, Caterpillar demonstrated an autonomous soil compactor powered by AI, while Komatsu unveiled new excavators with electric swing drives. Chinese manufacturers are now offering dozens of electric models across loaders, forklifts, and mining trucks.
The message is clear: electric construction equipment has crossed from concept to commercial reality. But with adoption varying so widely by machine type, buyers need to evaluate each product category separately.
