Fork Inspection: 4 Checks to Prevent Load Loss and Accidents

The forks are the most used part of any forklift. They carry every load, every shift, every day. But they also take hidden damage bending, wear, and cracking that can lead to sudden failure and dropped loads. Here are four checks that keep your forks safe and reliable.

 

1. Measure Fork Thickness at the Heel

The heel (where the vertical shank meets the horizontal blade) wears down from sliding under loads. Over time, this reduces the fork's load-carrying capacity. Measure the thickness at the heel with calipers and compare to the original spec stamped on the fork. If the thickness has worn below 90% of original, the fork is overload-rated and must be replaced. This is a critical safety check a worn heel can snap under a heavy load.

 

2. Check for Fork Tip Wear and Hook

The fork tips take the most abuse from dragging on floors, scraping concrete, and prying loads. Look at the tips from the side. They should have a slight upturn (typically 510 degrees). If the tips are worn flat, bent downward, or hooked upward, they no longer slide under pallets smoothly. Replace or reforge the tips (if the fork manufacturer allows re-forging). A bent or hooked tip also increases the risk of load instability.

 

3. Inspect for Cracks and Welds

Forks are forged steel and should never be welded. Look for cracks at the heel, along the blade, and near the mounting hooks. Use a magnifying glass or dye penetrant test if needed. Also check for evidence of field welding any weld on a fork invalidates its rating and makes it unsafe. If you find a crack or a weld, replace the fork immediately. Never repair a cracked fork it will fail again, often catastrophically.

 

4. Test Fork Positioning and Alignment

The two forks should be parallel and at the same height. Place a straight edge across the top of both forks they should touch evenly. If one fork is higher than the other or they point inward or outward, the carriage or fork positioning mechanism may be worn. Also check the fork locking pins. Worn pins allow forks to slide sideways under load. Replace any fork that does not lock securely into position.

 

Quick field check: Before your first lift of the shift, run your hand along the top and bottom of each fork blade. Feel for rough spots, dents, or sharp edges. Also look for paint cracking or flaking this often indicates bending or metal fatigue underneath. If you see rust streaks or cracks near the heel, park the forklift until the forks are replaced.
