​ Brake Care: 4 Checks to Stop Your Excavator Safely

Brakes are your last line of defense on any machine. On an excavator, the braking system includes service brakes (for stopping travel), swing brakes (for holding the house), and parking brakes (for keeping the machine stationary). When brakes fail, the results can be disastrous. Here are four checks that keep your excavator stopping safely every time.

 

1. Test the Parking Brake Daily

The parking brake is a spring-applied, hydraulically-released brake that engages when hydraulic pressure drops. Before starting work each day, test it. On level ground, apply the parking brake and attempt to move the machine at low idle. The machine should not move at all. On a slope, stop the machine, apply the parking brake, and watch for creeping. If the machine slides even slightly, the parking brake is not holding. Common causes: worn brake discs, low nitrogen pre-charge, or internal leakage in the brake release circuit.

 

2. Listen for Unusual Brake Noises

During travel, the service brakes should engage smoothly and quietly. Grinding, squealing, or scraping noises during braking mean worn brake discs or contaminated oil. Squealing often indicates glazed friction surfaces — usually from excessive heat. Grinding means the friction material has worn down to metal-on-metal. If you hear unusual brake noise, stop the machine and inspect the brake oil. Metal particles in the travel motor case drain oil confirm internal brake wear.

 

3. Check Brake Release Pressure

The brakes are held off by hydraulic pressure while the engine runs. If pressure drops below specification, the brakes drag, generating heat and wearing discs. Connect a pressure gauge to the brake release port on the travel motor or control valve. At full throttle, pressure should meet the specification in your manual (typically 3,500–4,500 kPa). Low pressure indicates a worn brake release pump or internal leakage. Ignoring low pressure burns out the brake discs quickly.

 

4. Inspect and Change Brake Oil

The travel motor gearbox uses oil that also cools and lubricates the brake discs. If this oil is contaminated, brake performance suffers. Check the travel motor gearbox oil level weekly. If the oil is black or smells burnt, drain and refill. Also look for metal particles in the oil — small shiny particles are normal as discs wear, but chunks indicate disc breakage. Change the travel motor oil at the interval specified in your manual, typically 1,000–2,000 hours.

 

Quick field check: On a slope with the engine off, the parking brake should hold the machine without any movement. If the machine creeps, do not operate — repair the brake before use. Also, after a long travel, walk around the machine and hold your hand near each travel motor (do not touch hot metal). If one side is significantly hotter than the other, that brake is likely dragging.
