The hydraulic system powers lifting, tilting, and side-shifting on a forklift. When it fails, the forks stop moving — and that stops your operation. Many hydraulic problems start small and can be spotted early. Here are four checks that keep your forklift's hydraulic system working smoothly.
1. Check Hydraulic Oil Level and Condition
Low oil is the most common cause of slow lifting and weak tilting. With the forks fully lowered and the engine off, check the hydraulic tank sight glass or dipstick. The level should be between the low and full marks.
Oil that is milky or cloudy means water contamination — drain and refill.
Oil that smells burnt or looks dark black indicates overheating from overwork or internal wear.
Oil with visible metal particles means pump or cylinder wear — schedule a system flush.
Top up with the correct viscosity oil specified in your manual. Do not mix different oil types.
2. Inspect Hoses and Fittings for Leaks
Hydraulic leaks are easy to spot but often ignored. Walk around the forklift and inspect all hydraulic hoses, steel lines, and fittings.
Look for wet spots, drips, or puddles under the machine.
Check hose ends for cracking, bulging, or chafing against metal edges.
Tighten loose fittings — but do not overtighten, which can damage threads.
A small weep today becomes a burst hose tomorrow. Replace damaged hoses immediately.
3. Test Lift and Tilt Response
Slow or jerky hydraulic response points to internal wear or contamination. Test the system:
Raise the forks to full height and time the lift. Compare to the specification in your manual.
Tilt the mast fully forward and backward — it should move smoothly without hesitation.
Check for drift: raise the forks halfway, shut off the engine, and time how long the forks take to drop. Excessive drift (more than 25mm in 10 minutes) indicates internal cylinder seal leakage.
Slow response or drift means worn pump, leaking cylinder seals, or a bypassing control valve. Schedule a pressure test.
4. Check the Hydraulic Filter
The hydraulic filter traps contaminants before they damage the pump and valves. Change the filter at the interval specified in your manual — typically 500–1,000 hours.
When removing the old filter, check for metal particles in the element. A few fine particles are normal. Heavy debris or chunks mean internal wear.
Replace the filter with the correct type — using the wrong micron rating restricts flow or lets contaminants through.
Reset the filter indicator if your machine has one. If the indicator shows blocked, change the filter immediately, even if it is not due.
Quick field check: After a hard shift, stop the forklift and listen to the hydraulic pump with the engine at idle. A whining or growling sound often means low oil, a clogged suction strainer, or worn pump internals. Investigate before the pump fails completely.
